Khoshoo Memorial Lecture 2011: Challenges for Achieving Conservation and Development

Speaker: Elinor Ostrom, Indiana University

Abstract
Understanding people and the ecologies they affect in order to increase the probabilities of long-term sustainability, requires academics, public officials, private firms, and citizens to work more effectively together and develop better tools of analysis. One important tool is a framework for the analysis of Social Ecological Systems (SESs) that provides a general language related to major factors affecting resources over time. Several examples of challenging SESs will be discussed including lakes in Bangalore, India. A brief discussion of plans for future research will conclude the lecture.
